Video Adventurous enough Review – Limbo – A Uniquely Dark Experience

Darkness is the single most detail of the two-dimensional, side-scrolling adventure, Limbo – created by PlayDead Studios. It is readily obtainable online via Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360. The undamaged game is set in black and white and looks as though you are playing amongst the shadows.

“Limbo” puts a jock in the shoes of a nameless boy who is drawn as a black with sharp-witted white eyes. His origins are unknown, but his trade is very clear: He must rescue his sister from pending extinction undefined but implied by the environment he is in. So he begins on a crabwise journey without any dialog, just the eerie sounds of extinction and destruction.

This game is not a walk through spooky though; the boy confronts many obstacles and puzzles along the way that he must give in to or explicate to get knowledge necessary for later tasks.

These are not habitual challenges, either. Many clues are unclear, so the boy will die often as players elaborate on a feel for what to expect as the story unfolds. The course is difficult and it will take some skill to make it through the game.

Alone in the Dark has some good ideas, but it fails because it tries over all. Nice visuals, great fire effects and valiant efforts at innovation do not make up for boring combat, frustrating controls, poorly designed levels and a banal story. There is a certain amount of charm of the old school adventure Alone in the Dark, but it shines only as the darkest of lights, surrounded by the darkness of its many failures.
