When Game Developers Go Indie, Everybody Wins

The stereotypical portrait of an indie gamemaker is an iconoclast who prizes art over mercantilism, or perhaps a kid with no formal training working in his parents’ domicile, cobbling together a genius new game idea using pirated software and raw inclination.

But that’s not what the new crop of indies are. They’re veterans of the triple-A meet biz with decades of experience behind them. They’ve worked for the biggest companies and had a mitt in some of the industry’s biggest blockbusters. They could profession on anything, but they’ve found creative fulfillment splitting off into a mini crew and doing their own thing. They’re using everything they’ve well-educated working on big-budget epics and applying it to secondary, downloadable games.

The good news for gamers is that, as the bustle’s top talents depart the big studios and go into concern for themselves, players are being treated to a new class of indie diversion. They’re smaller and carry cheaper charge tags, but they’re produced by industry veterans preferably of thrown together by B teams and interns. Most importantly, to big-budget games that need to appeal to the lowest communal denominator to turn a profit, these indie gems luxuriate in the undiluted creative vision of their makers.

With the PC pre-order demo of Left 4 Dead 2 is now available over the Xbox 360 one, eager beavers on the Steam forums have pulled apart and apparently revealed the prospect of a reward avatar in a complete game.

Function of the sender Fade Guy, a text file lists various clothes and accessories (heater, garden gnome, L4D2 shirt, shirt Bull Shifters, Depeche Mode shirt, etc.) in the section commented "Avatar Awards, the with each unlock apparently paired with a requirement for achievement style (beat all the campaigns, rescue Chompski Gnome, and so on).

Valve has not said anything to confirm this, but we would not put it past them, the wily old rascals. Maybe we'll ask Chet Faliszek Valve when it comes to the Eurogamer Expo on Saturday for Left 4 Dead Developer Session 2?
