[Game Review] Brutal Legend (Xbox 360)
by Zac Pritcher
Genre: Action / Adventure / RTS / Metal
Brutal Legend is the newest project of comic genius Tim Schafer, the driving force behind the game critically acclaimed as Psychonauts and Grim Fandango. Never heard of these games? I would not say this, but I am not surprised.
For some reason Schafer games tend to go unnoticed by the public games in general, despite rave reviews, probably due to a severe lack of marketing push from publishers. Chances are, however, that you have at least heard of Brutal Legend. This game has received much attention from the gaming press and general public as well as music thank you for publications focused on a topic of heavy metal star and all-star voice cast.
Review:
In Brutal Legend players take control of Eddie Riggs, a beefy roadie who is perfectly happy to keep out of the spotlight and do nothing more than make rockstars look good. The game opens with a hilarious sequence that strongly criticizes the weak, Poppie "metal" which is popular among composers today year-old angsty 14-skateboard who have nothing better to do than hanging around the mall .
During the scene in question, Eddie is somehow transported back in time to a heavy metal strange and impressive background to the subject land by the belt loop of his magic. Rocking a powerful guitar and a heavy-ass ax, Eddie soon finds himself to be a roadie for a new team.
Unsurprisingly, Brutal Legend has a very engaging and hilarious story, but it's also terribly deep and very interesting. Tim Schafer has proven again and again as a writer, competent, intelligent, brilliant and Brutal Legend is no exception. Throw Jack Black, one of the funniest, musicians and actors in the industry today, and you have a hell of a duo. During my play-through of the campaign, I found myself laughing several times, and I also developed an interest in much more history than I had originally planned.Unfortunately, the laughs slow because the story becomes epic, which for a front-heavy feel when it comes to comedy, but fortunately the game without lagging once....
